How to spot a cable problem on a Barrhaven door
Each side of the door has one lift cable. It runs from the bottom bracket up to a drum on the shaft above the opening. On a wide two-car door, a cable problem is usually easy to see:
- The bottom edge isn't level with the floor. One end of a wide double door sits noticeably higher than the other.
- The door rolls unevenly. One side climbs or drops ahead of the other, and the door may stop at an angle.
- The cable has come off a drum. Overhead, the cable is loose, looped, or sitting outside its groove.
- Broken wires near the floor. Look a little above the bottom bracket for strands sticking out.
- The bottom corner hardware is rusting. That includes the bracket, the retainer that holds the weather seal at the bottom of the door, and the bolts.
- Grinding or popping from the track as a roller drags or pushes against the track.
What not to do: don't open the door by hand, and don't try to pull it level. The bottom bracket holds the cable under spring tension, and a wide door with one side unsupported can twist in the tracks.
Why cables fail on Barrhaven doors
Salty slush at the bottom corners. Driving home along Strandherd, Greenbank, Jockvale, Fallowfield, Longfields or Cambrian in winter means bringing salty slush into the garage. It melts along the bottom of the door, right where the bottom brackets and retainer sit. As the photo above shows, rust takes hold on the bracket and retainer first, and the cable that hooks onto the bracket starts to corrode too.
Original hardware on older Barrhaven doors. Barrhaven has been building since the 1960s. Old Barrhaven came first, followed by Longfields, Davidson Heights and Barrhaven on the Green, then Chapman Mills and Stonebridge. On doors that still have their original bottom brackets and cables, years of winter salt can wear the bottom corners even when the panels still look good.
Spring breaks that let cables go slack. When a torsion spring breaks on a double door, the cables can loosen instantly and slip off their drums. If the opener keeps running, the door can come down crooked and the slack cable can kink. Many cable calls start with a broken spring. See spring repair in Barrhaven.
Wide, heavy insulated doors. Newer homes in Half Moon Bay, Quinn's Pointe and Stonebridge often have insulated steel double doors. A wider, heavier door puts more load on each cable and bottom bracket, so a corroded bracket gives way sooner.
Bumps from busy driveways. Bikes, hockey bags heading out to the Minto Recreation Complex or Walter Baker Sports Centre, or a bumper backing out too close can bend a track or bottom bracket. Once something is bent, the cable rubs on it and starts to fray.
Before and after: a Barrhaven bottom bracket and cable job
The "before" photo under the video shows what we found at the bottom corner of a Barrhaven door. The bottom bracket was rusted, the bottom retainer was corroded, the roller was still in its track, and the lift cable ran up the side. Fitting a new cable onto a rusted bracket would only bring us back later, so we replaced the corner hardware along with the cable.
The "after" photo in the next section shows the new galvanized bottom bracket, with its "warning: under tension" label, and a new roller fitted in its place.
What a Barrhaven cable repair involves
- Secure the door first. We clamp it in the tracks so it can't move while we work.
- Inspect the whole lift system. That covers both cables, both drums, both springs, the bottom brackets, retainer, rollers and track alignment.
- Written quote, approved by you before any parts come off.
- Release the spring tension with proper winding bars.
- Replace the cables in pairs, plus galvanized bottom brackets and new rollers where the old ones are rusted or worn. We replace cracked or worn drums as well.
- Wind both drums evenly and re-tension the springs, so the bottom of a wide double door sits flat on the floor.
- Balance and safety test. The door should hold halfway up by hand. Then we set the opener's force and travel, check the safety reversal, and lubricate rollers and hinges.
Most cable and bracket jobs take 45–75 minutes.
