Signs of a broken spring on a Barrhaven garage door
Two-car garages are the norm in most of Barrhaven, and a double door is heavy. When a spring gives out, you'll usually see one of these:
- A split coil above the door. Look at the spring or springs on the steel bar over the opening. A break shows up as a clear gap between coils.
- The opener lifts the door a short way, then stops and reverses. The opener's safety setting is reacting to weight it can't lift.
- The door won't move by hand once you pull the emergency release.
- The door drops faster than normal when it closes, or lands with a thud.
- One side lags as the door moves, or a cable hangs slack at a drum.
- You heard a crack in the garage and didn't find anything that fell over.
Leave the door closed and unplug the opener. A double door without spring support puts the full load on the opener's drive and the top section of the door. If the door is stuck open, don't pull it down by hand. Call us instead.
Why springs break in Barrhaven homes
Streets built at the same time wear out at the same time. Modern Barrhaven began in the 1960s, and most of it was built in phases since then by large builders: Longfields, Davidson Heights and Barrhaven on the Green, then Chapman Mills, Stonebridge, Half Moon Bay and Quinn's Pointe. On one street, the homes often went up within a short span with similar standard builder springs. When one neighbour's spring breaks, others nearby with the same original hardware may not be far behind.
Standard-cycle springs on busy doors. Builders usually fit standard-cycle springs, which are commonly rated around 10,000 open-close cycles. In a family that drives through the garage for school drop-offs, practice at the Walter Baker Sports Centre or the Minto Recreation Complex, and trips to Chapman Mills Marketplace, those cycles get used up steadily.
Heavier insulated doubles. Newer homes often have insulated steel double doors, sometimes with windows across the top. A heavier door needs springs sized for its actual weight. If the springs are only just big enough, they work hard on every lift.
When one part fails, others take the hit. A broken spring doesn't fail in isolation. As the photo above shows, removed hardware can include more than springs: here, a cracked cable drum and a bent opener arm came off along with the old springs. That's why we check the drums, cables and opener linkage on every spring call.
Cold snaps and damp garages. In unheated garages, the steel is as cold as the outside air on January mornings, and spring thaw brings condensation. Both are hard on a spring that's already worn.
Springs we install on Barrhaven doors
| Door setup | Where it's common | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Two torsion springs on a double door | Most Barrhaven homes from the 1990s on | Replace both as a matched pair, sized to the door's measured weight |
| Single torsion spring | Single-car garages, townhomes | Correct size, or a two-spring setup on heavier doors |
| High-cycle torsion | Garages used as the main entrance | Rated for more cycles than standard springs; we quote it alongside a standard spring |
| Extension springs | Some older homes in Old Barrhaven | Matched pair with safety cables, or a conversion to torsion |
We measure wire size, inside diameter and length against your door. We don't guess from the old spring's label. Comparing systems? Read torsion vs extension springs in Ottawa.
What a Barrhaven spring repair involves
- Check everything that moves: both springs, the cable drums, cables, end bearings, rollers, tracks and the opener arm.
- Written quote, approved by you before any work begins.
- Lock the door and release the tension with proper winding bars.
- Install new springs matched to your door. If a drum is cracked or the opener arm is bent, those get replaced in the same visit once you've approved them.
- Wind, balance and test. Lifted by hand to halfway, the door should stay there. Then we set the opener's limits and force, check the safety reversal, and lubricate the hardware.
A spring replacement usually takes 30–60 minutes on site.
