How to tell a spring has failed in Bells Corners
When a spring gives out, the door suddenly feels like dead weight. Look for any of these:
- A visible gap in the coil on the bar above the door.
- The opener raises the door a few inches, then reverses. Its safety limit is reacting to weight it can't carry.
- The door won't move by hand after you pull the red release cord.
- A loud bang from the garage with nothing fallen over.
- A slack cable at one of the drums above the door.
Leave the door closed and unplug the opener. Without a working spring the opener is trying to lift the full door, which can strip its gears or bend its arm.
Bells Corners homes and the springs that hold their doors
Some of Ottawa's first tract homes. Lynwood Village was built by Bill Teron between roughly 1958 and 1966 and is considered one of the first tract-housing neighbourhoods in Ottawa. Arbeatha Park went up just before it, in the mid-1950s. Many of those bungalows were built with carports or modest single garages, and a lot of them have since been enclosed or rebuilt with modern sectional doors fitted to openings that were never designed for them.
Westcliffe Estates came next. Assaly built most of the older homes in Westcliffe Estates from 1969 to the mid-1970s, with the Terrace Drive and Mill Hill pocket added in the 1980s. These split-levels and two-storeys more often have attached single or double garages. Many doors here are on their second or third set of springs, and the replacement sets are not always sized to the door that is hanging today.
Greenbelt exposure. Bells Corners is surrounded by NCC Greenbelt, woods and farmland. Garages that back onto open land see harder wind and deeper cold on January nights than more sheltered streets downtown. A spring that is already worn tends to snap on the first sharp cold morning of the season, when the steel is coldest and the door is heaviest with ice along the bottom seal.
Bells Corners door setups and the springs they need
| Door setup | Where it's common | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Single torsion spring on a retrofit single door | Lynwood Village and Arbeatha Park bungalows | Weigh the door and correct the spring size, not just copy the old one |
| Two torsion springs on a double door | Westcliffe Estates split-levels and two-storeys | Matched pair, ideally high-cycle if the garage is the main entrance |
| Extension springs on an older single door | A few original garages on older streets | Matched pair with safety cables, or a torsion conversion |
On doors with two springs, we replace both together. The second spring has done the same work and is rarely far behind.
Door types we see in Bells Corners
Because Bells Corners is so close to our Larkspur Dr shop, many of our customers here are repeat clients and neighbours. We've learned that Lynwood bungalows with single doors usually need just one torsion spring, while the larger Teron two-storeys built later on Greenbelt-backing lots often carry a double door with two springs.
If your house backs onto the Greenbelt, check the door each fall: a quick lift by hand to halfway should leave it hovering. If it drops or shoots up, the spring is out of balance and worth a look before the cold sets in.
