How to tell a spring has failed in The Glebe
Here's how to tell, without climbing a ladder, that your spring has let go:
- Look up at the bar above the door. A spring with a gap in it is broken.
- Try to lift the door by hand with the opener disconnected. If it feels like it weighs a few hundred pounds, the spring isn't helping.
- Listen to the opener. Straining, then stopping, points to a spring.
- Check the cables. Slack cables often mean a spring has failed.
- Think back. A loud bang in the past day or two is a strong clue.
Once you've confirmed it, leave everything as it is and call us. Don't try to wind or unwind a spring yourself.
Local reasons The Glebe springs give out
Early-1900s streets. Most of the Glebe was built up in the early decades of the 20th century, between the Rideau Canal and Bank Street. Houses sit on narrow lots, and where there is a garage it's usually a small detached building at the back, reached by a long, tight side driveway.
Small doors, odd sizes. Rear garages here were often built for much smaller cars, and their openings don't always match today's standard door sizes. Replacement doors are sometimes custom-cut or fitted with mismatched hardware, which means the spring on top may not suit the door below it. We size each spring to the door's measured weight.
Canal-side cold. Detached Glebe garages are rarely heated or insulated, and the neighbourhood's mature trees keep them shaded. In January, the steel in the spring is as cold as the air outside. A spring that's nearly worn out will usually choose a frigid morning to fail.
Springs we install on The Glebe doors
| Door setup | Where it's common | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Extension springs | Older rear garages | Matched pair with safety cables, or a torsion conversion |
| Single torsion spring | Small detached garages with replacement doors | Sized to the door's real weight |
| Two torsion springs | Renovated homes with newer, wider garages | Matched pair replaced together |

What The Glebe homeowners should know about their springs
Because many Glebe garages are compact, we often find springs mounted close to the ceiling with little room to work. We use the right winding bars and take the time to set up safely.
If the garage has been rebuilt or extended over the years, the door may have been changed too. We'll check that the spring, drums and shaft all suit the door that's there now.
What spring repair in The Glebe involves
- Inspect the whole door: springs, cables, drums, bearings, rollers, tracks and the opener arm.
- Give you a written price before any work begins.
- Clamp the door and release any remaining tension with proper winding bars.
- Fit new springs sized to your door's weight, not just copied from the old label.
- Wind, balance and test. The door should hold halfway up by hand; then we set the opener's force and travel limits and check the safety reversal.
Most spring replacements take 30–60 minutes on site.
How fast we reach The Glebe
We drive out from Nepean, about 20 minutes via Highway 417 away, and we schedule The Glebe calls so the truck arrives with the parts it needs. That covers The Glebe, Glebe Annex, Lansdowne and nearby streets.
