Signs of a cable problem
A lift cable runs up each side of the door, from the bottom bracket to a drum on the shaft overhead. When something goes wrong, you’ll usually notice:
- The door hangs at an angle or one bottom corner sits off the floor.
- A cable is slack, looped, or off the drum at the top of the door.
- Frayed strands near the bottom bracket, where the cable is most exposed.
- Rust on the bottom bracket, roller or bolts at the bottom corners of the door.
- Jerky travel or a roller jumping the track on one side.
Please don’t touch the bottom bracket. It holds the cable under full spring tension. Loosening it, or forcing a crooked door up or down, can let the door drop or twist out of the tracks.
What the photo shows, and why it matters
The photo under the video was taken at the bottom corner of a door. The bottom bracket and roller are rusted, the wooden jamb beside them is rotting, and debris has built up along the bottom of the door. The cable hooks onto that bracket, and that bracket holds the whole weight of that side of the door.
When a bracket rusts this far, a new cable alone isn’t a real fix. The bracket can let go at the cable hook, and a rusted roller drags in the track. That’s why we price new galvanized bottom brackets and rollers with the cables whenever the old ones look like this. A rotting jamb isn’t garage hardware, so we point it out to you so you can have it repaired, and we don’t include it in our price.
Why cables and brackets wear out in Hunt Club
Water at the bottom corners. Snowmelt and road salt drip off the car and collect along the bottom of the door, which is where the brackets, rollers and cable ends are. With the Rideau River along its west edge and the Sawmill Creek wetlands in its green space, Hunt Club garages see plenty of moisture. Leaves and debris piled against the door hold that water against the steel.
Doors and frames from the 1970s on. Hunt Club was mostly built from the 1970s onward. Many homes have since had a new door, but the wooden frame and the original bottom hardware are sometimes still there. Hardware that has been through decades of Ottawa winters is often what lets go first.
Broken springs. When a torsion spring snaps, the cables can lose tension and jump off their drums. If the opener runs after that, the door can come down crooked and kink a cable. Many cable calls start with a broken spring, so see spring repair in Hunt Club too.
Something hit the door. A bumper, a bike or a snow blower knocking a bottom corner can bend the bracket or track, and a cable rubbing on bent metal frays quickly.
How we repair cables
- Lock the door in place with clamps on the tracks.
- Inspect the whole lift system: both cables, drums, springs, bottom brackets, rollers and track alignment.
- Written price that you approve before any parts come off.
- Release the spring tension safely with winding bars.
- Replace both cables, plus galvanized bottom brackets and new rollers where the old ones are rusted. Cracked or worn drums are replaced too.
- Wind both drums evenly and re-tension the springs so the door sits level on the floor.
- Balance and safety test, then set the opener’s force and travel and lubricate the hardware.
Most cable and bracket jobs take 45–75 minutes.
