Is it the spring? What Richmond homeowners notice first
When a spring gives out, the door suddenly feels like dead weight. Look for any of these:
- A visible gap in the coil on the bar above the door.
- The opener raises the door a few inches, then reverses. Its safety limit is reacting to weight it can't carry.
- The door won't move by hand after you pull the red release cord.
- A loud bang from the garage with nothing fallen over.
- A slack cable at one of the drums above the door.
Leave the door closed and unplug the opener. Without a working spring the opener is trying to lift the full door, which can strip its gears or bend its arm.
Why springs break in Richmond homes
A village founded in 1818. Richmond was one of the first military settlements in the area and sits on the Jock River. The older village core has a mix of 19th- and 20th-century homes, many with detached garages added over the years.
Fast-growing new subdivisions. Fox Run, a large Caivan community, has been opening in phases since about 2017, and more subdivisions are planned north of Perth Street. These homes have attached garages with insulated steel doors, many of them doubles. Their builder springs are still fairly new, but busy family garages can wear them quickly.
River-valley cold. Low ground along the Jock River can be colder and damper than the surrounding area in winter. Unheated garages near the river see frost on the hardware, which is hard on springs.
Richmond door setups and the springs they need
| Door setup | Where it's common | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Two torsion springs | Fox Run and other new doubles | Matched pair, high-cycle if the garage is the main entrance |
| Single torsion spring | Village garages and townhomes | Sized to the door's weight |
| Extension springs | Older detached village garages | Safety cables or torsion conversion |
We measure wire size, inside diameter and length against your door before we order anything. For more detail, read torsion vs extension springs in Ottawa.
Springs and doors around Richmond
Fox Run and other new subdivisions mean many Richmond doors are still on their first set of springs. Most will last years yet, but busy family garages can wear them faster than expected.
In the older village, doors are more varied. We often find older springs on replacement doors, and we size new springs to match the door properly.
Our spring replacement steps in Richmond
- Inspect the whole door: springs, cables, drums, bearings, rollers, tracks and the opener arm.
- Give you a written price before any work begins.
- Clamp the door and release any remaining tension with proper winding bars.
- Fit new springs sized to your door's weight, not just copied from the old label.
- Wind, balance and test. The door should hold halfway up by hand; then we set the opener's force and travel limits and check the safety reversal.
Most spring replacements take 30–60 minutes on site.
Our Richmond service area and response
We drive out from Nepean, about 20 minutes via Moodie Drive away, and we schedule Richmond calls so the truck arrives with the parts it needs. That covers Richmond Village, Fox Run, Richmond North and nearby streets.
