Is it the spring? What Vanier homeowners notice first
When a spring gives out, the door suddenly feels like dead weight. Look for any of these:
- A visible gap in the coil on the bar above the door.
- The opener raises the door a few inches, then reverses. Its safety limit is reacting to weight it can't carry.
- The door won't move by hand after you pull the red release cord.
- A loud bang from the garage with nothing fallen over.
- A slack cable at one of the drums above the door.
Leave the door closed and unplug the opener. Without a working spring the opener is trying to lift the full door, which can strip its gears or bend its arm.
Vanier homes and the springs that hold their doors
A historic francophone community. Vanier began as Eastview, formed in 1909 from the villages of Janeville, Clarkstown and Clandeboye, and was renamed Vanier in 1969 in honour of Georges P. Vanier. It joined the amalgamated City of Ottawa in 2001. Many houses date from the early and mid-20th century, now mixed with a growing number of modern infills and semis.
Small lots, single doors. Lots in Vanier are often narrow, so garages tend to be detached singles at the back or slim attached singles at the front. Older doors frequently still run on extension springs stretched along the horizontal tracks, or on replacement torsion springs that were picked to fit the shaft rather than sized to the door.
Unheated garages, full winter cold. Very few of the detached garages here are heated, so the steel in each spring sits at outdoor temperature through January and February. A spring that has lost some of its strength is most likely to snap on a frigid morning, right when the door is stiffest and the ice along the bottom seal adds resistance.
Vanier door setups and the springs they need
| Door setup | Where it's common | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Extension springs | Older detached garages | Matched pair with safety cables, or a torsion conversion |
| Single torsion spring | Attached single garages on older homes | Sized to the door's measured weight |
| Two torsion springs | Newer infill doubles | Matched pair replaced together |

Springs and doors around Vanier
In Vanier, many detached garages are close to property lines and lanes, so space is tight around the door. We work efficiently in tight spaces and keep the area clear and safe.
If your garage door has two different-looking springs, it's probably been patched before. We'll replace both with a matched set sized for the door.
