How to spot a cable problem on doors in Carp
Each side of the door has a lift cable running from the bottom bracket to a drum above. When one fails, you'll usually see:
- The bottom edge isn't level with the floor.
- The door rises unevenly, one side ahead of the other.
- A cable is loose or off its drum overhead.
- Broken strands sticking out near the bottom bracket.
- Rust on the bottom corner hardware.
Don't open the door by hand or try to pull it level. The cable is under spring tension and a door with one side unsupported can twist in the tracks.
Why cables fail on Carp doors
Gravel and wet ground. Many rural driveways are gravel, and detached outbuildings often have floors that stay damp. Moisture and grit at the bottom corners wear cables and rust bottom brackets.
Heavier doors, heavier cables. Oversized shop doors need heavier-rated cables and stronger brackets. When standard parts are used on heavy doors, the cable can fray or the bracket can bend.
Equipment bumps. Tractors, trailers and snowblowers moving in and out can clip a door or track, which can make the cable rub or slip.
What we find on Carp doors
| What we find | Where we see it | How we fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Frayed cable at the bracket | Damp outbuilding floors | New cables and galvanized brackets |
| Bent bracket on heavy door | Oversized shop doors | Heavier-rated brackets and cables |
| Cable off drum after a bump | Doors used with equipment | Track repair, new cables, rebalance |
Drums are inspected for cracks and wear; a worn drum can chew through a new cable.
Cable wear patterns in Carp
On large shop doors, cables can stretch or fray faster under heavy loads. Checking them each fall, along with brackets and rollers, helps avoid a failure in the middle of winter.
If equipment has bumped the door, look for bent track or a bent bottom section before running it again.
