Signs of a broken spring on garage doors in Carp
When a spring gives out, the door suddenly feels like dead weight. Look for any of these:
- A visible gap in the coil on the bar above the door.
- The opener raises the door a few inches, then reverses. Its safety limit is reacting to weight it can't carry.
- The door won't move by hand after you pull the red release cord.
- A loud bang from the garage with nothing fallen over.
- A slack cable at one of the drums above the door.
Leave the door closed and unplug the opener. Without a working spring the opener is trying to lift the full door, which can strip its gears or bend its arm.
Local reasons Carp springs give out
Village homes and rural acreage. Carp is a village in West Carleton, home to the Carp Fair and the Diefenbunker. Around the village, many homes are on large rural lots with attached garages plus detached workshops or barns. Those buildings often have wider or taller doors than a typical suburban house.
Bigger doors, heavier springs. A 10-foot-tall shop door or an extra-wide door for a truck or trailer weighs much more than a standard door. It needs springs sized for that weight, often high-cycle springs, sometimes more than two. When undersized springs are used, they break early.
Open fields and wind. Wind across open farmland hits rural doors hard, and many detached outbuildings aren't heated. Cold steel and wind load are tough on springs, and many breaks happen in the coldest weeks of winter.
Springs we install on Carp doors
| Door setup | Where it's common | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Two torsion springs | Attached doubles on village and rural homes | Matched pair sized to door weight |
| High-cycle or multiple springs | Large workshop and barn doors | Load shared across more springs, rated for heavy use |
| Extension springs | Older outbuildings | Safety cables or a torsion conversion |
We measure wire size, inside diameter and length against your door before we order anything. For more detail, read torsion vs extension springs in Ottawa.
Springs and doors around Carp
Many rural properties around Carp have workshops with doors 10 to 12 feet tall or wider than 16 feet. Springs for those doors are heavier and longer, and we bring the right sizes when you describe the door.
In village homes, standard doubles are more common. We still weigh the door, because insulated doors with windows or decorative hardware can be heavier than expected.
How we replace a spring in Carp
- Check the spring, cables and drums to confirm what's broken.
- Explain your options: standard or high-cycle springs, and whether to replace both.
- Lock the door in place before releasing any tension.
- Mount and wind the new springs to the correct number of turns.
- Test by hand and with the opener, adjust limits, and lubricate moving parts.
A typical visit runs 30 to 60 minutes, and you'll get the warranty details in writing.
