Signs of a cable problem on a Gloucester door
A lift cable runs from the bottom bracket on each side of the door up to a drum on the spring shaft. When one goes, it usually shows:
- The door sits crooked, with one bottom corner off the floor.
- A cable is slack or off its drum above the door.
- Frayed strands near the bottom bracket, where cables pick up the most moisture and salt.
- Rusted bottom brackets or rollers at the lower corners.
- Jerky, uneven travel, or a roller grinding in the track.
Don't try to level it yourself. The bottom bracket holds the cable under full spring tension. Leave the door closed and unplugged.
Why cables fail in Gloucester
The bottom corners take a beating. Every winter, slush from salted roads melts off the car and pools at the bottom of the door, right where the cable loops onto the bottom bracket. Corrosion starts there long before the rest of the door looks tired.
Long-serving hardware. Much of Gloucester's housing went up in the decades when the former township grew from about 13,600 people in 1956 to nearly 73,000 in 1981. On doors that still have older cables and brackets, years of winters add up.
A broken spring yanks the cables slack. When a torsion spring snaps, tension drops instantly and the cables can jump off their drums. Running the opener afterwards can kink them. Many cable calls start as spring calls: see spring repair in Gloucester.
Worn rollers and bent tracks. A roller that binds or a track nudged by a bumper makes the door travel unevenly, and the cable on that side rubs and frays.
What a Gloucester cable repair involves
- Clamp the door in the tracks so it can't move.
- Inspect the lift system: both cables, drums, springs, bottom brackets, rollers and tracks.
- Written quote before parts come off.
- Release spring tension with proper winding bars.
- Replace cables as a pair, with new galvanized bottom brackets and rollers where the old ones are rusted, like the parts in the photo above.
- Wind both drums evenly and re-tension so the door sits flat on the floor.
- Balance and safety test, then set opener force and travel and lubricate rollers and hinges.
Most cable and bracket jobs take 45–75 minutes.
