Is it the spring? Quick checks for Gloucester homeowners
You don't need tools to tell. From the floor, with the door closed, look at the steel bar above the opening:
- A gap in the coils. A broken torsion spring separates into two pieces with a visible space between them.
- The opener hums, lifts a few inches and gives up. Its safety setting is reacting to a door it can't carry alone.
- The door feels like a wall when you try to lift it after pulling the red release cord.
- The door slams instead of settling on the way down.
- Cables hang loose at one or both drums.
Leave it closed. Without spring support the full weight of the door sits on the opener and the top section. If the door is stuck open with a car inside, call before trying to force it down.
Why springs break in Gloucester
A building boom means a lot of springs the same age. Gloucester grew from about 13,600 residents in 1956 to nearly 73,000 by 1981, the year it became a city, and passed 150,000 in the 2021 census. Large parts of established neighbourhoods like Blackburn Hamlet, Beacon Hill, Pineview, Convent Glen and Blossom Park went up within a few decades of each other. Where doors still carry original or long-serving springs, they tend to reach the end of their cycle life in clusters.
Rust is the quiet killer. Look at the photo: the coils are brown with surface rust. Rust adds friction between coils and creates weak spots in the wire, and the spring snaps at one of them. Unheated garages, slush melting off the car, and damp spring thaws all speed it up.
Standard-cycle springs and daily use. Builder-grade springs are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles. A household that uses the garage as its front door can burn through that in well under a decade.
A heavier door than the spring was sized for. If an older door was swapped for an insulated steel one without re-sizing the springs, they work harder on every lift and fail sooner.
Deep cold. Steel springs in an unheated garage are as cold as the January air outside, and a worn spring is most likely to give up on the first lift of a frigid morning.
Springs we fit on Gloucester doors
| Door setup | What we usually see | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Two torsion springs on a double door | Most two-car attached garages | Replace both as a matched pair, sized to the measured door weight |
| Single torsion spring | Single-car garages and townhomes | Correct size, or two springs on a heavy insulated door |
| High-cycle torsion | Garage used as the main entrance | Rated for more cycles than standard springs; we quote it side by side |
| Extension springs | Some older homes | Matched pair with safety cables, or a conversion to torsion |
We measure wire size, inside diameter and length against your door rather than trusting the old spring's markings. Weighing your options? Read torsion vs extension springs in Ottawa.
How a Gloucester spring visit works
- Full inspection: springs, drums, lift cables, bearings, rollers, tracks and the opener arm.
- Price in writing before anything comes off the door.
- Clamp the door and unwind safely with proper winding bars.
- Fit springs matched to your door. If cables or drums are worn, we show you and replace them in the same visit once you approve.
- Balance and test. The door should stay put when lifted halfway by hand. We then set opener force and limits, test the safety reverse and lubricate the hardware.
Most spring replacements take 30–60 minutes on site.
