Signs of a cable problem on a Manotick door
There's one lift cable on each side, running from a bracket at the bottom corner of the door up to a drum on the spring shaft. When one fails, you'll usually notice:
- A slanted bottom edge: one side of the door is higher than the other.
- A loose or tangled cable at the top, off the grooves of its drum.
- Frayed strands just above the bottom bracket, where moisture sits.
- Rust on the bottom corners: brackets, bolts and the aluminum retainer that holds the seal.
- The door jerks or binds partway up.
Don't force it. The bottom bracket and cable carry the spring's full tension. Pulling a crooked door level by hand can jam it in the tracks or release that tension suddenly.
Why cables wear out in Manotick
Moisture at the bottom of the door. Manotick sits on the Rideau River, and many garages here see damp air, snowmelt and road salt carried in on the car. Water collects along the floor at the bottom of the door, which is exactly where the cable hooks onto the bottom bracket. Rust starts there and works up the cable.
A broken spring knocks cables loose. When a spring snaps, the cables lose tension and can jump off their drums in an instant. If the opener keeps running, the door can come down unevenly and kink the cable. Many of our Manotick cable calls start as spring calls; see spring repair in Manotick.
Older doors, original hardware. Manotick's oldest buildings, like Watson's Mill (built in 1860) and Dickinson House (1863), are a reminder of how long the village has been here. Homes have been added in waves since, from the village core to newer subdivisions such as Mahogany. On older garages, the cables and bottom brackets are often the original parts, and steel that's been through many winters is due.
Heavy decorative doors. Wood or carriage-style doors weigh more than a plain steel door, so each cable and bracket carries more load and wears faster.
What we do on a Manotick cable repair
- Secure the door with clamps so it can't move.
- Check the whole lift system: both cables, drums, springs, bottom brackets, rollers, tracks and the bottom retainer.
- Written quote for your approval.
- Release spring tension safely with winding bars.
- Replace both cables, plus bottom brackets, rollers or drums where they're rusted or worn, as in the video above.
- Wind both drums evenly so the door sits level on the floor.
- Balance and safety test, then opener force, limits and auto-reverse.
Most cable jobs take 45–75 minutes.
